THE CORNERS of Wiley’s mouth hitched up as he studied the myriad of expressions on Ram’s face. A mixture of panic, anger, and confusion each took a turn. Knowing Ram as well as he did, he noted the same look the lion shifter carried when he argued with his inner lion. Considering how often Ram debated with his other half, Wiley was amazed and amused how laid-back Ram normally carried himself. Perhaps he vented everything internally and let bygones be bygones.

Wiley could have stood watching the amazing view of a nude Ram clearly jousting with himself for much longer, except Ram stood up and started dressing at a fast clip.

Shocked, Wiley blinked at the abrupt change. “What are you doing?”

Ram spared him a glance that could have meant anything. “I’ve got to go.”

Wiley’s mouth dropped open. Completely dumbfounded, he tried to make sense of the sudden change. “A minute ago you didn’t want to release me long enough to piss. Now, you can’t get out of here fast enough.”

Keeping his head down and avoiding Wiley’s gaze, Ram zipped up his jeans, pulled the shirt over his head, and remained mute.

Growing rage and frustration ran amok in Wiley’s mind. He turned the chaos into verbal questions needing frank answers. “What is the problem?”

“I… just need to get home.”

“Bullshit.” Wiley clenched his fists at his side. “Don’t bother lying. We both can detect those a mile away.” Still naked, he stepped directly in front of Ram. “Tell me what’s wrong.” The soft demand carried a stern order.

“Nothing.”

Annoyance built and overflowed. “Shit. We fucked. It was great. So what’s the damn problem?” He threw his hands up in the air in a gesture of disbelief.

Ram met his gaze firmly, his amber eyes filled with turmoil. “This can’t happen again.” He grabbed his shoes and trotted out the front door, leaving Wiley standing in shock and hurt.

The best sex he’d ever experienced just happened with his closest friend. He couldn’t see the issue. For in his mind, the combination meshed perfectly. Friends and lovers. The best of both worlds. Good enough for him to willingly give up his playboy status and settle down with the man who made the world stop spinning during their intimate time together.

Unfortunately, Ram obviously saw things differently.

Questions ran through his mind like ticker tape, but answers remained elusive. At a loss, Wiley scrubbed his face and replayed the last few minutes, finding nothing to explain Ram’s sudden about-face. One second he held on like a lifeline, nibbling, and showering sweet affection on Wiley. The next, he darted from the house as if the building had caught fire. Ram had claimed him. Marked him. For someone who said they wanted commitment in any relationship, the moment couldn’t have been better.

So what the hell happened?

If anyone should get cold feet, it should have been Wiley. Yet he and his wolf side reveled in the possession, eager to explore the limitless bounds of this new segment in his and Ram’s lives. No anxiety flared at the thought of leaving bachelorhood behind.
